Bruised birdies

I have been blessed in my job tremendously in that even though I’m the newest person on staff, I have a window office. Now, my office is on the first floor and there is a significant amount of natural green space surrounding it. It’s a nice campus. But as we all know, with natural space comes a nice little side benefit–NATURE. Bees, grasshoppers, birds of all sizes and shapes, squirrels, and innumerable other critters. And for some reason, they REALLY LIKE MY WINDOW.

This morning I came in and a grasshopper was plastered to my window admiring himself. Later a yellow jacket decided to hang out about 3 feet from my nose–fortunately on the outside of the glass. I’ve had towhees prance up and down, up and down my windowsill for no apparent reason other than their narcissistic habits. Crows and blue jays like to scream at themselves. Really loudly.

And most amusing of all, every five minutes WHAM!–something frams its poor little head against the window going 90 miles an hour. All of a sudden something will blur past the corner of my eye and WHAM! Hummingbirds are the funniest. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!

It makes it hard to concentrate but at least I get a laugh out of it, and I’ve never seen any fatalities. Plus, studying the underside of every imaginable creature small enough to glue itself to the window is a rarity I doubt I’ll get to experience again.
